Background of the Study

Modern media has become a powerful tool in shaping public opinion, including perceptions of traditional healing practices. In Aba North, traditional healers have long served as trusted custodians of indigenous knowledge and healthcare. However, with the rapid expansion of digital media platforms, the portrayal of traditional healing has increasingly come under scrutiny (Nwosu, 2023). Media narratives often frame traditional healing as archaic or unscientific, which can undermine the credibility of these practitioners (Ekwueme, 2024). Conversely, modern media also offers a platform for traditional healers to reach a broader audience and share their practices (Okon, 2025). This dual influence creates a complex dynamic in which public perceptions are continually reshaped by media content, necessitating an investigation into its overall effect on the image of traditional healers (Nwosu, 2023).

Statement of the Problem

Despite their cultural and historical significance, traditional healers in Aba North face a growing challenge as modern media increasingly portrays them in a negative light. This shift in public perception may lead to diminished trust and reduced patronage for indigenous healing methods (Ekwueme, 2024). The study seeks to understand the extent to which media narratives affect community attitudes towards traditional healers and the implications this has for public health and cultural heritage (Okon, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To assess the impact of modern media on public perceptions of traditional healers.

2. To examine the media narratives that influence these perceptions.

3. To recommend strategies for improving the representation of traditional healing in media.

Research Questions:

1. How does modern media influence the public perception of traditional healers in Aba North?

2. What media factors contribute most to changes in these perceptions?

3. What measures can improve the portrayal of traditional healing practices?

Research Hypotheses:

1. Modern media significantly influences negative perceptions of traditional healers.

2. Biased media portrayals correlate with reduced trust in traditional healing.

3. Strategic media interventions can enhance the public image of traditional healers.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it explores the impact of modern media on the cultural legitimacy of traditional healers. Its findings will aid media professionals, healthcare practitioners, and policymakers in developing balanced representations that support both modern and indigenous healthcare methods (Nwosu, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to examining the influence of modern media on the perception of traditional healers in Aba North Local Government Area, focusing solely on media content and its local impact.

Definitions of Terms:

1. Modern Media: Contemporary digital and broadcast platforms.

2. Traditional Healers: Practitioners who utilize indigenous methods for healthcare.

3. Perception: The interpretation of media messages and public opinion.
